Plot Twist - April 11, 2023

Thing

As I was walking home from physio this morning I saw a teenage girl sitting on some steps across from the design school she was attending wearing a ball cap, head down, long hair covering her face crying silently. You didn't need to hear her to know that something was wrong and she was crying. I stopped and sat with her for a few minutes. She seems to be disillusioned with life. It wasn't a boyfriend problem, it seemed more existential than that. She wondered how long she would feel like that. . .

I wasn't much help. I told her that she was not alone. I told her that others feel the same and that others also wondered about the cruelty that happens on planet Earth.

I wish I had told her to follow her heart. I wish I had told her to find her tribe. I wish I had told her to get out of her own head. I wish I had told her to start where she was, use what she had and do what she could.

I sat with her for a few minutes contemplating life with a total stranger girl until a friend came to be with her.

I hope I see her again. I think I could be more helpful the second time around.

Story #1

They met at their usual cafĂ© after work. She sat stone-faced as he told her things were complicated, he wasn’t sure how he felt anymore, he was struggling, and that he needed space. He told her it was over. He was full of ‘I’m sorry's’ and ‘It’s not you, it’s me's’.

Plot Twist - 3/24/2021

 The Universe

I was a teacher for more than 2 decades. A reluctant teacher, but a teacher none the less. I've met lots of kids and have had lots of interactions with students over the years.  My school had a cash bonus program. One of the incentives gave teachers a bonus for doing "covers". This means that you would cover a class for an absent teacher (illness/meeting/workshop/etc.).  The way it worked was if a teacher covered more than 3 classes per month s/he was entitled to a €100 bonus for that month. Pretty cool. Well, sort of. In principle it was great but in reality there were still some years where the system was lopsided and some teachers ended up doing lots more than 3 covers per month and the money after taxes wasn't really worth it. Of course you always want to help the school and your colleagues even without the bonus. However, you lost time at school for prep, marking, sending/answering emails, making photocopies, etc. which meant that you had to finish your work at home and this cut a big hole into your evenings.

One afternoon I was asked to cover a PE class outside on the field. WTF. I wasn't dressed for this and really not in the mood for it either as I was a bit heavy on the covers. In addition, I was one of the oldest teachers in the school and really couldn't they just give the cover to someone else. I was pissed off to begin with and went into the class in a mood. It was an overcast winter day and when I arrived the kids were already on the field. I think there there were 2 classes there at the same time with just me. The kids were absolutely ELECTRIC that day. Two classes together with a substitute teacher is often a cause for pandemonium. I was also expected to take roll in the middle of all this confusion. By the time it started to drizzle I was out of patience.

So I took them all back inside. Made them put their heads down until the end of class. They did what I asked without complaints. By the time the class was over they had regained some self-control and were able to go to their next class calmly and quietly.

But while they were sitting there one student looked at me and asked, "Miss, what did we do?" I can't remember what I said to him but I know what I couldn't tell him. I couldn't tell him that I didn't even have the right shoes to be out on the field. I couldn't tell him that some years there was a quiet war going on about the distribution of cover work.  I couldn't tell him that I was already in a bad mood. And somehow all these years later and I'm still thinking about that incident. I've thought about it a lot lately. And I mean A.LOT!  I really wanted to apologise to that boy but he has long since graduated from high school and I have recently retired so how the hell is that ever gonna happen?

Lockdown can be a bitch but I am trying to get outside for some exercise. Spring has arrived to Monte Estoril and the sun is shining after a long cold, dark winter here in Portugal. My gym is closed and we are confined to our neighborhoods so I have been walking.

Today on my walk, I noticed someone waiting outside the local barber shop. Low and behold, it was the boy (well, now he's a young man who will graduate from college this year) from my cover PE class all those years ago. We talked for a few minutes saying our hellos, how are yous and what are you up to nows. He gave me an update on his 2 brothers who I also taught. All is well in his life. Then, what I've been waiting for, hoping for: I apologized to him. I took him back to that day and that moment in time. I explained that I was pissed off when I arrived to the field and my fuse was short. He didn't remember the incident at all. He laughed and admitted that they were and he was sometimes electric. We agreed that for the most part that's normal.  He said an apology wasn't necessary and thanked me for it. He said he would tell some of the others about our talk.

I didn't think that he would remember that incident and I'm glad he didn't. It was just one small blip in his day a long time ago that wasn't very significant. I knew it wasn't going to change his life.      But still . . .  It wasn't very fair of me to drag them all inside that rainy day. In retrospect maybe 15-16 year olds running around for the better part of an hour in the rain would have been good for them and would have given them the opportunity to burn off some of the excess energy they always seem to carry. Maybe they would have moved to their next class calmly and quietly just the same.

In any event, I'm glad that I ran into him and got to talk to him about that moment. To set the record straight. To tell him that I know I was wrong that day.

Sometimes the universe smiles upon you and you get a chance to right a wrong.

Plot twist - 1/28/21

 1 Thing

Religion

Belonging to an organized religion doesn't necessarily mean that one is spiritual. It has been my observation that many people who belong to a religion believe in a god. They think that there is only one god and that the god that they believe in is the true god.  Many don't believe that there are different ways to express religious beliefs. Wars have been fought using religion as a weapon.

There is a difference between being religious and spiritual. . .

I'm not a fan of organized religion . . .

Dear Mr. President,
It's me, Mo . . . in Lisbon. We need to talk. I'd like to thank you for your message of unity and all the caring and empathy that you are showing us. The kicker is that I know you mean it. You really care about the American people.
You have a hard job in front of you. But don't worry you will receive a lot of help and support from those who have voted for you. After all we are all in this together.
Stay in your magic,
Mo . . . in Lisbon

Plot Twist - 3 Things

   3 Things and

Today is the 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century.

Facebook   and just like that the fb post was gone . . . I find it interesting that people on fb create a post that they know will be controversial, then they don't want to hear other people's views. They seem only to want their "friends" to tell them how smart they are and agree with their viewpoint. When tempers start to rise they don't turn off the comments, but delete the entire post. Poof! Like it never existed. They eliminate everyone's thoughts, voice, and contribution to the discussion. They eliminate that moment when we can all learn from one another. They eliminate that moment when unity can begin. Then they whine that people are disrespectful and, oftentimes, threaten to delete people from their "friends" list. Honest dialogue gone. Another lost opportunity.

Go figure . . .

Religion   It seems like our newly elected president, President Joe Biden, isn't quite "Catholic" enough for many "Republican" Catholics. It's a shame. President Biden and his family have had their share of tragedies and the President's faith has helped him through the tough times. President Biden really does go to church. He's not out for a cheap photo op with an entourage in tow marching pedestrian cleared streets to stand in front of St. John's Church to prove how holy he is. Instead he has accepted the sacraments, raised his children in the Catholic church, and tries to live his faith. (Side note: He actually carries his dead son's rosary beads in his pocket and they offer him some comfort.)

He is not perfect and neither is his family but they don't pretend to be. They have experienced loss and lots personal problems including typical adolescent behaviors, but also drugs and divorce. I would bet there was a fair bit of shouting in their house over the years. They are just like us. We aren't perfect either. Through it all President Biden never gave up on his kids and never turned his back on them. He gave them unconditional love. Just ask Hunter.  https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/hunter-biden-joe-biden-love/2020/10/24/2ca1f492-1481-11eb-bc10-40b25382f1be_story.html

The United States was founded on the principle of a separation of church and state. That was one of the most generous gifts that our founding fathers have given us. We can worship to the god of our choice and in the way we chose. Or . . . we can choose not to worship at all. It's our choice. It's not the government who will map out our souls.  The presidency is secular. That's a good thing.

President Biden is the president of all Americans. not just the Roman Catholics. It seems that many conservative Roman Catholics feel that President Biden isn't up to the job.

One reason some "Republican" Catholics don't like him is because he is pro-choice. They also think that you cannot be a Catholic and a Democrat. They believe that Trump actually won the election. They are of the opinion that Biden is in cahoots with China. They have confidence in conspiracy theories about "The Deep State". They think that fact-checking is censorship. They judge us all. They follow militant clerics such as Archbishop Viganò, who wants the Pope to resign, and renegade Fr. James Altman, a social media phenomenon, who is a naysayer on climate change and thinks that COVID-19 is a man-made conspiracy. He asserts that the democratic platform "is against everything the Catholic Church teaches". He tells his followers that they must "Repent of your support of that party and that platform, or face the fires of hell.” (https://www.startribune.com/two-renegade-priests-one-calls-covid-sham-one-says-dems-face-hell/572411762/ I know . . . right? There must be a very big difference between "Republican Catholics" and "classic Catholics".

"Classic Jesus" is all about love and helping others. He understands that people are not perfect and He doesn't really expect them to be. He always speaks the truth. He is compassionate. He forgives.

President Biden is in good company because "Republican Catholics" don't like Pope Francis either and are praying for his conversion to Catholicism.

feathers

This morning I took a walk and discovered another feather on my street . . .

I also went into work for a couple of hours and as I exited my car in the school's parking lot I came across another unexpected treasure.

It's always a pleasure . . .

I kept it . . .

I've been coming across a lot of feathers lately. I found a feather in my building yesterday.  It was still in the same place a day after I first noticed it. I normally don't disturb the feathers that I encounter as I'm not sure that they are more than mine to observe, but today was different. After a lot of back and forth about displacing the feather, I decided that the universe sent that feather to me, directly to my building, and brought it home.

Another day, another feather . . .

I discovered this feather on this morning's walk on the esplanade along the sea.  I wasn't expecting one there.  Definitely a nice surprise.

feathers galore . . .

It's hot here. Way too hot for me so no walk today.  However, I needed to go to the shops.  I love this neighborhood because everything is within walking distance.

So . . .

First feather of the day was beautiful and I came across it in the lobby of my building.

and then came across lots of different feathers on my way.

I know, I know. It's crazy, right?    It's amazing and I love it.

Maybe I'm considering becoming a believer . . .

Feathers Appear when Angels are Near… What is The Meaning of a ...

Classes ended on June 26. They were remote. We started distance teaching on March 13.  It was a long term.

This was my 10th year at OIS. As I am retiring (yeah) I have been at the school on and off this month wrapping things up: returning books, organizing papers, packing up my desk, stripping files from my work computer, clearing up loose ends, etc.

On my desk in the Drama room, a small, poorly lit, partially underground room I was relegated to teaching in so often over the years that the former principal referred to it as "Ramona's room", I found a pretty white feather.  It was quite a nice surprise as there was no reason that a feather should be there. It wasn't part of a costume, display or student work.  Huh . . . Later that same day on the way to the recycling bin I, once again, noticed a feather this time grey and white on the path. Huh. . .

I've been trying to get some exercise in the mornings. I stay close to home and on a recent morning walk I once more noticed a grey and white feather in my path. Huh . . .

But what does it mean?

According to The Centre of Excellence (https://centreofexcellence.com)  "A flurry of feathers . . .
. . . or even a single feather is thought to be one of the most familiar ways an angel messenger may attempt to connect with us. If you keep finding feathers appearing out of nowhere, often in random places, chances are it's a gift from the angels."

Meanings of Finding Different Coloured Feathers in Nature ...

If I believed I just might think that I have just moved forward on a new path, a spiritual path.

Countin' the days

Image result for calendar - counting the days

Term 2 began on January 6.

We were lookin' at 7 weeks of classes before our half-term break.  Hooray, it's finally arrived. This morning I had the luxury of sleeping until 7:37 this morning.  Went for a walk and stopped in a cafĂ© for breakfast. The rest of the day will include a film at the mall and dinner in SetĂşbal.  No marking today, no prep work for the upcoming week. A very different Sunday for me.

Next break is a 2-week Spring (Easter) break.

New streets

“Chapter One of My Life. I walk down the street. There's a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in.
I am lost. I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It still takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two. I walk down the same street. There's a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I'm in the same place! But it isn't my fault. And it still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three. I walk down the same street. There's a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it there. I still fall in. It's a habit! My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter Four. I walk down the same street. There's a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

Chapter Five. I walk down a different street.”

Although the calendar says that it's fall, Portugal hasn't yet got the memo. It's warm and we're still sleeping with the windows open at night.

Last night I heard a woman walking up the street crying at 1am. She was talking with someone on her phone and while I couldn't make out exactly what she was saying, I knew from her tears and tone that she was heartbroken . . .

http://img03.deviantart.net/fd03/i/2010/059/7/0/rain_street_by_bondxgirl23.jpg
On a dreary Friday night we sat in rush hour traffic on our way to Lisbon. Anxious to reach our destination but dreading it all the same. We were together but quiet and alone with our thoughts. It was particularly cold and dark. It was one of those rainy nights that there is no illumination at all. The rain and cloud cover felt heavy and the little light that the street lights and headlights cast was shadowy and threatening. But it was fitting and really couldn't have been any other way as we were going to the vet's to pick up our cat who had died. She had cancer and didn't make it through her first bout of chemotherapy.  The cancer was advanced so the point of the chemo was to reduce the mass to give her some relief and buy her some more time. Buy her some time and buy us some more time with her.

As I got out of the car I turned my collar to the wind and took a deep breath. . .

I did a really cool thing today but let me start my story at the beginning.

In late July/early August I saw an ad from a business on a Facebook group that I belong to looking for American English speakers to do voice over work.  I responded by email and they asked me to send a voice sample.  I sent the sample early August and they said that they would contact me in the future if there was a need.

They contacted me earlier this week to go to their studio to record samples for a possible job.

It was very cool. . .

Urgeiriça - July 4

http://cdn.cmjornal.xl.pt/2015-04/img_757x426$2015_04_12_19_08_59_446327.jpg
The in-service week at school finished on July 3 and a small break was due.

We traveled to Urgeiriça to have a look see. Urgeiriça was know for its uranium mines and it is said that Marie Curie was supplied with uranium from here.  According to Wikipedia control of this mine was a source of concern during WWII.

Urgeiriça is not more than a collection of miner's cottages (very well kept) and the hotel which is on the outskirts of town. It was so small that it didn't even boast a café.

We stayed at the Hotel Urgeiriça on the outskirts of town. This out-of-the-way hotel hosted many important foreigners including Clarissa Eden, Winston Churchill's niece, who married Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon. He was 27 years her senior and was the British Prime Minister from 1955-57. The hotel's old world charm set the right tone for a quiet weekend.

Canas de Senhorim is a stone's throw away and with a population of approximately 3,500 people offers everything that one would need: shops, movies, restaurants and entertainment. The stone architecture in this region is of interest as are the pillories. Evidently there are 3 different routes that promote this region's architecture.

A little further afield is Viseu, a 30 minute drive from Urgeiriça. Viseu is a thriving hub of life and culture. The city is clean and modern and the historic center is full of historic buildings, restaurants, cafes, shops and other places of interest.

fair is fair . . .

Every 5 year old, regardless of race, religion or country of origin, knows that one of the basic principles of life has to do with being "fair."  You can hear the cries on the playground, "Not fair. Do over."  They are willing to share the only cookie with 1 or 2 or even 3 others, but they each insist that the pieces be equal. They cry out of frustration when they believe that something isn't fair.

And yet, as we grow older, most people seem to want the lion's share of whatever the hell it is.  If one receives less, they shout, "It isn't fair." But for many, dare I say most, they want more than you have and will shove you out of the way to get it.

I have spent my adult life looking at this issue.  I don't think there is a person more fair than me on planet Earth.  I tend to look at the entire situation before deciding what's fair and what isn't.  Got to say this has not gotten me very far, nor has it earned my ANY respect.  In fact, I would said just the opposite.  I would venture to say that others think I am weak because I don't have an agenda nor do I try to take advantage or get an edge up on others. The word "stupid" has even been used.  A friend of mine asked me a few years ago, "Who told you that life was supposed to be fair?"

Well, my conclusion is this.  Yeah, maybe life isn't fair but people should be. . .

no time . . .

http://regmedia.co.uk/2006/12/18/time_magazine_poty.jpg

I'm a blogger who doesn't have time to blog. Now, what's wrong with that? In the past couple of weeks I've seen and learned about things that require reflection and I just don't have the time or energy to address my life.

A couple of weeks ago on a sunny Sunday morning LuĂs and I decided to take a ride out to Colares to go to the market. We take the route along the coast as it's such a beautiful drive. As we were driving up the hill from Malveira to Azoia an emergency vehicle passed us with a blaring siren. By the time we reached the crest of the hill we happened upon a motorcycle accident. There were 3 motorcycles and men strewn across the road. The EMT's were helping one of the victims. He was bleeding and they had put something under his head so that his face and head were protected.  As I drove carefully through this scene, which was like something out of a movie,  I looked around me and took it all in. I focused on one body. It was still. It was soooooo still. He was dead. You just knew it. You could actually feel it. The lifelessness of the man lying face-down on the cold concrete unattended and alone despite the spectators milling around . . .    They closed the road to traffic only minutes shortly thereafter and it stayed closed for the better part of 4 hours. Later that evening this story opened the news: 2 dead and 1 hanging onto life as a result of a motorcycle collision.

So many lives changed in a split second. . .
